Union calls for immediate PBS listing of asbestos cancer drug

Posted Thu Nov 8, 2007 6:00pm AEDT

The Construction, Forestry, Mining
and Energy Union (CFMEU) says federal Health Minister Tony Abbott needs to move
immediately to list the asbestos cancer drug Alimta on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has today recommended that the drug should receive a federal subsidy and the recommendation is now awaiting final approval from Mr Abbott.

CFMEU spokesman Martin Kingham says those suffering from the asbestos cancer
mesothelioma may never get access to the drug if it is not approved immediately.
